The data show that U.S. gasoline consumption grew 1.7 percent per year from 1990-2004, dipped to -0.2 percent per year from 2005-2014, and then recovered back to 1.1 percent per year in 2015-2018. This is approximately 15-20% of the world’s total oil consumption. This is followed by China, which consumes 14.2 million barrels of oil per day, and India, which consumes about 4.7 million barrels per day. The United States, China, and India alone account for over a third of the world’s total oil consumption.
